Newberg is an ideal city for advanced manufacturing because of its proximity to Interstate 5 and its prime location on Highway 99, making it highly accessible to many modes of shipping and distribution. A-dec Inc, which manufactures dental equipment, was first established here in 1964, and today ships all over the world. Climax Portable Machining & Welding Systems has been making portable tools for challenging jobsites for nearly 50 years. PPM Technologies, which makes food processing equipment, employs 80 people world-wide, with the vast majority of those at its headquarters in Newberg.
In order to encourage and facilitate new business endeavors, the city of Newberg secured an enterprise zone designation in May of 2014 from Business Oregon. This designation grants relief from property taxes for 3-5 years for any new start-ups within the designated area. Newberg is currently the only city in Yamhill County to have this enterprise zone designation.
Given the list of well-respected wine brands that have cropped up in the area, Newberg has positioned itself as a wine tourism hub within the Oregon wine culture. Many businesses in the downtown blocks cater to tourists, shoppers and foodies, creating a cluster of enterprise and intrigue. The Friday Art Walk in downtown Newberg is a cooperative effort of the downtown businesses to promote local artists after hours, and the Tuesday Farmer’s Market celebrates the local bounty every week.
The town’s George Fox University has ranked within the top 100 universities nationwide on many bona fide lists over the years. Portland Community College operates a branch campus in Newberg, and offers classes in the community in a variety of fields. 670 students enrolled in the 2014 Spring Term at PCC Newberg, for both credit and non-credit courses.
The Willamette River runs through the south part of town, and has a boat launch and recreation area popular with many sun and water lovers. Sportsman Airpark, in operation for nearly 70 years, is Newberg’s privately owned, public use airport for hobbyists, small charters and flight lessons. The affordable housing, solid school system and peaceful rural setting all add to the high quality of life to be found here.
With the Downtown Transformation Project underway, and the plans for the Newberg-Dundee Bypass in the works, Newberg is well on its way to creating a safe, efficient and beautiful downtown core.
