The world-famous Red Hills of Dundee, home of internationally exported wine brands such as Argyle and Joe Dobbes Estate, were first pioneered by visionary winemakers like David Lett, Don Lange and Dick Erath. Searching for the perfect place in America to grow Pinot noir, these early trailblazers set the stage for what has now become the highest concentration of wineries found anywhere in Oregon.
Today, over 30 wineries make their home in the Dundee Hills, among them market leaders like Winderlea, Sokol Blosser and Four Graces.
The gastronomy selection in Dundee is equally strong, both in volume and distinction. Local trend-setting chefs source regional, natural ingredients for both contemporary tastes and classic pairings. Well-established restaurants such as Tina’s, the Dundee Bistro and Red Hills Provincial Dining have long satisfied discerning locals and cosmopolitan visitors alike.
A popular recent addition to the food scene is the trendy Red Hills Market. Equal to anything Napa Valley has to offer, this combination upscale grocery and artisan cafe is packed year-round with bon vivants.
Other industries might be easily overlooked amid the wine hubbub, but standouts such as Bag Connection Inc, a 20-year anchor business with international clientele, manufactures an entire product line of 100% recyclable industrial-use bags. Another large employer, Dundee Fruit Company, makes fruit pie fillings, taking advantage of its close proximity to quality ingredients.
Dundee’s main arterial, Highway 99, is about to undergo a major transformation. Substantial infrastructure improvements such as new sidewalks, street lighting, boulevard trees and repaving will all occur by mid-2015. The completion of the Newberg-Dundee Bypass in 2017 will dramatically decrease travel times to Portland and the I-5 corridor. These upgrades will offer established industries and entrepreneurs many layers of opportunity for years to come.
