Currently a boom-town for fine wines and great restaurants, Carlton once had its roots in lumber, especially in the mid 1800s. Much has changed since the days of saloons and train whistles, but Carlton still celebrates its rich history in its refurbished structures, grand murals, and the future bike trail that will follow the train tracks of yesterday.
Carlton’s wine scene was established over two decades ago by local icons like Carlo & Julian, the Carlton Winemakers Studio and most notably Ken Wright Cellars. Today industry greats like Louis Jadot of France and Kendall Jackson are snapping up Carlton area vineyards to capitalize on the region’s special terroir.
With great wine comes great food – authentic french country dining, European-style pastries, and traditional pub style favorites can all be readily found in the few short blocks of downtown Carlton. The only outdoor pool in Yamhill County also lies in the heart of town, and attracts families from all over the region.
Making investments for the future, the City of Carlton has committed $10 million over the next 10 years to revamping the historic business district’s infrastructure, making significant improvements to its water, sewer, streets and parks.
Buoyed by the city’s leadership, mid-size investors are buying buildings and renovating them into beautiful restaurants, tasting rooms and luxury accommodations.
Carlton is home to several famous wine-related festivals and civic events that raise funds for local youth programs and charitable causes.
The Yamhill Carlton AVA features over 60 member wineries and vineyards, and pairs nicely with the towns largest employer, Carlton Farms, a nationally-renowned fine meat producer. Chefs from the state’s top restaurants celebrate both industries by preparing creative dishes that make the most of Carlton’s bounty.
